by Adolfo Wildt. The work, presented at the 14th Venice Biennale, was offered as a gift by Maestro Toscanini, who chose to purchase it for 30,000 lire and donate it to the State. In Venice, the work had achieved great success for the imposing virility and concentrated expression given to the figure depicted in the act of conducting the orchestra. The smoothness of the marble, polished and yellowed by the wax patina, as Wildt used his own technique, particularly highlights the hair and brilliant gaze.

Sheep tethered for evening milking; on the left, the summit of Machaerus (Mount Mukawir)—known today as Machaerus—is a modest hill known to visitors to Jordan for its legend. According to biblical tradition, Herod built his fortress here, protected on three sides by deep ravines. The palace was intended to be of extraordinary size and magnificence, attracting travelers from all over the world. After the death of its builder, the site passed to the king’s son, Herod Antipas, responsible for the imprisonment and assassination of the prophet Alexander the Baptist. Although wars destroyed part of the architectural treasures housed on Mount Mukawir, scattered remains of colonnades and quadrangular structures still exist. From the summit, the view of the Dead Sea opens up 1,100 meters above sea level, offering unique and unforgettable panoramas.
